History
Coloring books date back to the 1880s when educators first starting to believe that all students could benefit from an art education. This was brought on by a series of lectures by Joshua Reynolds. He argued that students benefited from art by enhancing their conceptual understanding, developing cognitive abilities, and improving fine motor skills.
The first coloring book is thought to be 'The Little Folks' painting book by The McLoughlin Brothers in 1880. They continued to publish coloring books until the 1920s, when they became part of the Milton Bradley Company.
Initially, coloring books were designed to painted on. It wasn't until the 1930s when crayons became popular that they evolved so they could be either painted or colored.
Now, with the recent growth of adult coloring books, this seems to be a medium that is not going away any time soon. In fact, you can now even make your own coloring pages using digital tools.
